Bedse Caves near Pune - A 2300 Year Old Buddhist Monument

History

The Bedse caves are one of the lesser known places near Pune. The place is so untouched that even the natives of this place are not aware of the existence of this place. These ancient caves were built 2300 years ago by the Emperor Ashoka popularly known as “Ashoka the Great”. Emperor Ashoka, the ruler of the Mauryan dynasty, ruled from the period of 269 BC to 232 BC. During this period, most of the Indian subcontinent came under his rule.

मुखदर्शन प्रवेशद्वारावर चैत्यकमान उठवण्यात आली आहे.दोन्ही बाजुंना जाळीदार खिडक्या आहेत.त्या दिसत नाहीत.

Bedse Caves are rock cut caves by the Buddhist monks during 1st century BC

भाजे चैत्यलेण्यातील स्तंभावरील धर्मचक्र वगैरे 

बौध्द प्रतीके;स्तंभ षटकोनी

चैत्यग्रुहामधील साध्या स्तंभावरील धर्मचक्र,त्रिरत्न वगैरे बौध्द प्रतीक.

There are two main caves.The big one at centre is the chaitya (prayer hall) with large stupa.
While the other cave is a monastery-Vihar
बेडसे लेण्याच्या दोन्ही बाजुंना छज्जे आहेत.छज्जे वेदिकापट्टी लाकडी अलंकरणाप्रमाणे प्रस्तारातुन खोदण्यात आलेली आहेत.

The Carving in the Chaitya are wort seeing and they do make us remind of our ancient glory.
