Ambivali Cave Near Karjat

आंबिवली चे  लेणे

The cave, which is a Buddhist work,  between B. C. 250 and A. D. 100, is cut in a long low hill in a curve in the bank of a branch of the Ulhas. It is approached by a sloping rock, and overlooks the river from a height of about twenty feet. 

कर्जतच्या उतरेस आंबिवली चे  विहार  लेणे पुरातन  लेण्या पेकी आहे . सध्या तिचे रुपांतर हिंदू मंदिरात करण्यात आले  आहे.

बाहेर व-हंडा मग आत प्रर्थानेचा हॉल आणि मग आत गाभारा अशी मांडणी आहे. व-हंडा ला चार खांब  आहे.

समोर व्ह᷾रडा  व  नंतर उंच प्रशस  दालन अशी ह्या विहारांची रचना आहे . व्ह᷾रडा दालनात जाण्यास दोन दरवाजे आहेत . व्ह᷾रडा चार स्तंभ  असून त्यापेकी  दोन अष्ट कोनी  व दोन सोळाकोनी  आहेत





दालनात तीन्ही भिंतीलगत प्रत्येकी चार असे एकूण बारा निवास कक्ष  आहेत .
प्रर्थाना सभागृहात विशेष असं काही नाही. मूळ गाभाऱ्याच्या बाजूला बारा कोनाडे कोरले आहेत त्यात काही मुर्त्या आहेत, तर काही कोनाडे रिकामे  आहे.

लेण्यात काही सुंदर मुर्त्या आहेत

The second pillar of the verandah, to the left of the entrance, has a Pali inscription in one vertical line reading downwards. Some dim letters can also be traced on each of the central pair of pillars

लेण्याच्या डाव्या बाजूला पाण्याचे टाक खोद्ले आहेत .

दर्शनी भिंती वर वादिकापट्टी  व पताकांचे नक्षी काम दिसून येते

लेण्यात काही सुंदर मुर्त्या आहेत.

Kondana Caves

Kondana history : These are group of 16 buddhist caves located in village by same name, Kondana or Kondivadi. These caves are on the way to Rajmachi and approx 33 kms from Lonavala. Its part of three sister caves located in and around Lonavala, viz Kondana, Bhaje and Karla caves. Kondana caves were carved in 1st century BC !!!!

कोंढाण्याला एकूण आठ चैत्य व विहार आहेत.त्यातील दर्शनी चैत्य व लगतचा विहार हि सर्वात पुरातन आहेत.इसवी सनपूर्व दुसर्या शतकात ती खोदण्यात आली आसावीत.विद्या दहेजिया ह्यांच्या मते,बिहारमधील बाराबर गुंफा व भाज्याचे चैत्य लेणे ह्यांच्या दरम्यानच्या काळात कोंढाण्याच्या विहाराची निर्मिती झाली असावी.
These caves enclose sculptures, viharas, stupas, chaityas which are all part of magnificent Buddhist architecture. Although earthquake in early 1900s destroyed and damaged many stupas, front entrance and floor of the cave but still some of the architecture is intact and is best example of our glorious past.
कोंढाणे - चैत्य व विहार बाजुबाजुला आहेत.ईसवी सनपूर्व पहिल्या शतकातील हे लेणे आहे.विविध चैत्यगवाक्षांमधुन अशी बदलती शैली व आकार दिसुन येतात.

 The main cave has large entrance which is shape of fig leaf and supported by curved beams. There are many pillars with a large stupa in the cave.

कोंढाणे मुखदर्शन - हीनयान पंथीयांची हि लेणी राजमाचीच्या उत्तर कड्याखाली आहेत.

Some thing was scribbled in old Pali language close to it but it also sported someone had scribbled own name close to it which was clearly a eye sore and showed our negligence in protecting this beautiful heritage.

One eye catching thing was life sized statue of a lady coming out of the rock. Alas the face was completely damaged but her hairs and ornaments were neatly carved in the rocks and were intact.

चैत्यगवाक्षाच्या बाजुचे छज्जे,लाकडी इमारतीप्रमाणे प्रस्तरात कोरलेले दिसतात.

Close to the main cave was another cave which might have been a sort of dining hall or kitchen with small rooms carved in the wall.

The ceilings of the cave had some square design which  was engineering skill to prevent the cave wall to collapse. So much of engineering in those days !!!

Apart from that on the entrance walls were carvings of men and women in dancing form.
